PORTA DELLA DOGANA

Porta della Dogana was located near the church of the Chain and closed the passage that still exists and allows you to enter Piazza Marina. It was opened in 1570 in order to allow the entry of goods from the sea and which were placed in the city warehouses before being put on the market to change the gabelles. For this reason it was commonly known as “della Dogana” or “della Doganella”.

The door was entirely made of tufaceous carving stone, and the external part was surmounted by a large eagle with spread wings and the royal arm on its chest. The doorway was 3,8 metres wide and 7,75 metres high but the complex with its decorations reached a height of about 15 metres. It was demolished in 1848 in the revolutionary movements.
